Have you just arrived at the festival?
William: Yeah we got here about 10 seconds ago.
Did you do anything last night or did you have a quiet night in, in preparation for today’s activities?
W: Kind of. We’ve been recording our 3rd album and we finished the 4th song last night, so we went out, celebrated with a curry. There were pictures of the Karma Sutra all over the restaurant, they’d prepared the food with all sorts of aphrodisiacs, it was an interesting meal.
Where about’s did you go, Brick Lane?
W: It was in Hammersmith where we were recording, but you can get a good curry down there.
You finished your 4th track off of the new album last night, are you hoping to finish anymore tracks in the next few weeks?
W: We’re gonna be writing a lot of new material. We’re going back into the studio in about 3/4 weeks time. We’re doing this album bit by bit. We doing it like this rather than going away for 2 whole months.
Do you think that putting an album together this way adds or detracts to the material? Is it less intense?
W: It’s just different. I was always one for going away to a place for a month or two, getting really involved in something. I liked it being intense with a bit of anger there and people picking each other off. I think sometimes that’s important in making something. But I think the way we are doing it now, is more sensible perhaps. I think the results are good, that’s like the main thing really. As long as it comes out and sounds really great, the means and the ways don’t matter I suppose. It saves having fallouts and things. (Smiling) We have enough of them already.
Have you got a deadline for the new album?
W: We don’t. The deadline’s when it’s good. When we feel like it’s ready to come out it’ll come out.
Is that one of the perks of being in a band already with two successful albums?
W: Definitely. We’re really lucky like that.
So you haven’t been out to look at the festival yet today?
W: No I haven’t looked around yet. We’re gonna go look around and get falafel aren’t we?
Absoultey. I feel like I’m missing out, I’ve never had it before, what are they made of?
W: (Smiling) I’ll hold you to that. They are like these brown, balls; I’m not describing it well. They’re made of chickpeas. They’re good, it’s protein. It’s wrapped up with hummus, salad. You could put whatever you want in there, some halloumi, some amber sauce maybe.
I feel under pressure now, if I don’t take you to a good falafel place are you going to be annoyed?
W: (Smiling) No, don’t worry. I won't hold it against you. Is it a big place?
Yeah it’s a good size, fairly intimate, plenty of stages. It attracts a mixed crowd people. I’ve seen everything from older peeps to babies with headphones on.
W: So not all pilled up punters then?
No, not at all. Everyone seems really positive, relaxed and just here for the music. Are you excited about playing today?
W: Yeah. It’s always fun so see what happens. We’re playing 2 new songs and hopefully people will be up for it.
How do you feel when you play new songs?
W: Quite scared actually.
Is there a sense of I hope they like it?
W: Definitely. You don’t know how people are gonna react, you do get scared but you just have to do it, look at it for what it is. People don’t know it, they aren’t gonna pogo up and down they’re gonna sit there, listen to it and consider it a bit more. That’s what I do when someone plays a new song. I think o.k so that’s what their doing. It’s brave, you have to be brave. Although it makes me laugh when people clap at the wrong part of the song.
Are you playing any other festivals?
W: We’re doing a few of the festivals this year.
What’s your favourite one?
W: Glastonbury. If you’ve been there you’ll understand. The weather was really good there last year apart from the thunder but that was exciting. We missed the rain on Monday, we left straight after Blur. I wanted to stay and party but Blaine was a bit heartbroken actually and just wanted to go home.
Anything else in the next few weeks that you’re looking forward to?
W: I Dj a lot with Kai. We’re going out to Helsinki, Japan and Russia. I can’t wait to go to Russia; I’ve always wanted to go there. I can’t imagine what it’s gonna be like. It’s always exciting, we get to travel a lot and meet people we’d never otherwise meet. We’re obsessed by dance music, so we’re always looking for new tunes. We’ve started to make our own dance tracks. There might be a side project at some point, an album or ep of dance things.
Who’s your favourite dance artist?
I think Switch is a genius. His ideas are very out there, there’s a real clarity to them.
Who are you looking forward to seeing this evening?
The streets
Sorry they’ve cancelled. Maybe now you’ll get a 3 hour set or something?
W: Yeah cool, we could do a three hour progressive rock set.
Or you could do a Dj set for us?
W: That would be great actually.
Silent Disco is on later. Will you be coming along for a dance?
W: We did a gig like that. It was just bizarre; there are no vibrations from the bass or the kick or anything. You’re playing music and it’s not really real. It only exists there. There were microphones all over the crowd, so you could hear people. If you whispered into your mic you knew someone was going to be next to one of those mics. You could hear the audience whispering, talking about you, it was a bit like playing Chinese whispers. It’s weird. You don’t wanna know what people are saying, you can get a bit freaked out. But yeah I’ll pop down later for a dance. (pointing to the mic) Can we take this laser gun when we go?
Of course.
Mystery Jets have just released their third album Serotonin on July 5, 2010. The first single to be released from the album, "Dreaming Of Another World" will be released at the end of this month. Watch out for the next edition of Fd2d, for our recent chat with the boys.
