Graham Ensor Exhibition – Crux 1

By Emily Boneham

‘Mark-making, rhythms and repeats from the visual ‘spectrum’ become symbols and metaphors for the beating heart of our existence’. Graham Ensor has explored the textures and essence of Embrace Arts through his recent exhibition, Crux 1. His work is displayed throughout the corridors, representing the patterns and repeats from within the Embrace Arts building that have inspired his work, from the floor tiles to the blinds.

This exhibition brings together Graham Ensor’s interest in the relationship between buildings and people and this exhibition in particular is of a personal nature for Graham. Following an accident, he was introduced to Embrace Arts through Headway, so to be able to bring his work to Embrace Arts has meant a lot.

The project not only displays Graham’s work but also allows the public to become involved, creating their own pieces of art which are then displayed amongst the works of Graham Ensor.

The idea of Crux was to symbolise the cross road that occurs when people are brought together within a building, the works also have influences of Aboriginal art from Ensor’s experiences in the Australian outback and Arizona. Ensor has long been interested not only in the landscape but has also attempted to incorporate his interest in astronomy and science into his work.

Future projects for Ensor include displays of sculptural, ceramic and charcoal work in Japan with a ceramics artist he met at Embrace Arts. Then through September and October, Graham will be working with the G8 Artists, a Leicestershire based arts group, in a project called Timescapes, which will look at the idea of progression.
