Recycling is changing!!!!!!

Recycling in Leicester is changing. From October 2011, all houses and flats which currently use a green box or green bag will switch to the new orange bag recycling service, making it easier for people to recycle a far greater range of materials. It will also help the city increase its overall recycling and composting rates and so reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. This service is provided by Leicester City Council and Biffa.

Sorry, but you will need the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.

An orange bag recycling trial started in September 2010 across four city wards. The aim of the trial was to make recycling easier for residents and to increase the range of items that can be collected, enabling more of Leicester’s household waste to be recycled.

Since the start of the trial in September 2010…

• The number of residents recycling has increased by over 20%
• The amount of recycling collected increased from 8.2 tonnes to 18.7 tonnes
• The amount of refuse collected decreased from 98.1 tonnes to 83 tonnes

Feedback from residents on the trial was very positive…

• Over 91% of respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with the orange bag scheme
• Over 95% of respondents felt the orange bags had reduced the amount of rubbish in their black wheelie bins

This is an exciting development for recycling in Leicester, making it easier for everyone in the city to recycle more.
