charliedontsurf blogged Criminally Underrated

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska

I've been told by loads of guys that I should like Bruce Springsteen more than I actually do. But I don't know, sure, I liked "Streets of Philadelphia" after hearing it on the soundtrack to the film Philadelphia (which oddly enough my mother would put on for my car drive to school...) but I couldn't help but dislike the tight jeans, yellow telecaster and bandanas of the e-street band leading Bruce. He always reminded of that kind of relentless spirited yet misguided f..

charliedontsurf blogged Live Review: Los Campesinos w/ Swanton Bombs & Islet

It's the first time Los Campesinos! have ever played Leicester, and it really shows. The place is totally packed, there's 14 year old kids that I keep inadvertently spilling my drink over and stumbling into because frankly, they're too small for me to see in all the hubbub. There's also young adults, who I tentatively class myself within, although I in reality have more in common with the 14 year old kids, what with all the immaturity and the like. Theres also a large base much older men and women; the..

charliedontsurf blogged Album Review: Los Campesinos! - Romance is Boring

I’ve been following Los Campesinos! for some time now and, to date, I have yet to be disappointed. After the Sticking Fingers Into Sockets EP and their debut album, Hold on Now, Youngster, the band earned a reputation for bright, upbeat music, indebted heavily to both C86 indie-pop and the US twee movement pioneered by K Records. Both releases were notable for the contrast they offered to many UK acts achieving success on the indie touring circuit, as each song was delicately layered with as many as ..

charliedontsurf blogged Happening Things: Word! @ The Y Bar

Tomorrow night is Leicester's monthly spoken word and poetry night, Word! at The Y Bar. Ignorance again has denied me from going to this, but I have on good authority from the lads down at From Dusk Til Dawn that it's a real hoot. This month's special guest is River Wolton who has been praised by Moniza Alvi and was the poet Laureate of Derbyshire for a while. It's 2 quid to get in so it's worth a look eh?

To be honest, as long as there's someone as mental as this (who sounds like a hippy Jo..

2. Alan Moore

Sorry for lack of posts for a while, I think we've all been having a bit too much fun, and therefore been feeling a little too hungover to justify being in any way articulate about anything apart from how much fun we've been having and how much our heads hurt. But anyway, until we get our review of the Los Campesinos gig finished, (which will be soon) and our review of the amazing From Dusk Til Dawn Imaginarium, we'll settle for the master of the graphic novel, Mr Alan Moo..

charliedontsurf blogged Tubelord w/ These Furrows, Tall Ships & Junior Fencing..

Hey you Leicester kids, want to check out some good bands on in Leicester? Then head down to Firebug on Friday to check out the Tubelord gig!

Much to my chagrin, I have missed Tubelord a few times in the past, usually due to lack of funds, work commitments or most ridiculously because I was across the road too busy stuffing my face with elaborate cocktails and throwing ice around the place that I lost track of time and missed their set (the cocktails were shockingly volatile.) Anyw..

charliedontsurf blogged Action Beat - Possibly the most fun band ever

I'm doing myself no favours in the "i'm in no way self indulgent" debate by writing this article, but I don't care, because I god-damn love Action Beat.

Action Beat are from Bletchley, a place I can imagine must be terribly boring, being a constituent of a fake town; Milton Keynes. I have been to Milton Keynes for some inane reason, and never wish to go to again, not because it's awful but because it's the world's most infuriatingly normal place. Everything's completely fine t..

1. Woody Allen

Allen Stewart Konigsberg is a American national treasure, unashamed Manhattan dweller and Hollywood’s worst nightmare. Born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn in 1935, his unashamedly stereotypical Jewish persona runs throughout his work. Acutely aware of his red hair, diminutive stature, whining voice and neurotic sensibilities he has been copied, parodied, and often by Allen himself, incorporated into his own work. To simply dismiss this as a shameless plug of his own nature, and..

charliedontsurf blogged Favourite Bands: Pavement

It seems only fitting to make my first entry on this site about Pavement. They’ve been one of my favourite bands for a long time now and really signified a sea change in the way I looked at music. They’re something of a cornerstone to this blog as well, given that we’re all obsessive fans. Furthermore, it seems fitting to publish this now, with the recent news of a reunion tour rekindling interest in a band that, despite never reaching the big time, retained a core of dedicated and loyal fans.
