As somebody who hasn’t seen The Horrors since their ‘interesting’ debut album Strange House, I was sceptical when I heard such great reviews for their third album Skying. But I trusted my source, a good friend with music taste so similar to mine I figured he must have had a point. So when I saw they were back in Birmingham I bought the album and went along, and I am so glad I did. Read more..

Standing in a room in which every single person in there falls in love with the same girl at exactly the same moment is quite a strange experience. I’d like to think I was the only one whose heart skipped a beat as Claire Boucher played the Brudenell Social Club through the night, but I’m pretty sure Grimes stole t... Read more..

June 11th will see the release of the second single from synth-pop act Age of Consent. The new single is called ‘Heartbreak’ and as its name suggests, it is a bleak take on a lost relationship. Similarly, the vid... Read more..

While listening to this new, typically idiosyncratic single by cosmic eccentrics Super Best Friends Club, I found myself split down the centre, psychologically speaking, until the two predominant aspects of my personality were standing in the middle of the room, facing one another down and shouting. Well. One of them was shouting. 'It's just a bunch of ridiculous pseudo-psychedelic nonsense bullshit rubbish perpetrated by drug-addled hippie fuckwits!' yelled the loud, cynical half of me, the half that ..

To say that it's been damp of late might be something of an understatement. BUT there is cause for optimism. Because in less than two months time, Sunrise Celebration will be gracing this plane of existence with its shining presence, and the second-to-last weekend in June may never be the same again... The new single from Let's Go Safari is a great slice of indie pop. It has loads of lo-fi qualities and I love the cutting toy synth sounds that give the track a bouncy fun feel and this is also mirrored by the naive melodies of the guitars. The track has shades of the band Colour Me Wednesday if you are familiar with them. The vocal delivery is infectious and has you humming along even if you dont know the words, its certainly a track that I will be listening to in the summer. You can stream the track ..

King Charles has created this fabulous character for himself, where his flamboyant look and classic sound bring a rare touch of elegance and suave to the 21st century, straight from the historical depths of the 17th. Though it’s all been combined in a certain way with contemporary feel to make a record bursting with poise and good feeling. Read more..

Imperial Leisure were the first band that I ever saw live, November 8th 2008, supporting Less Than Jake at Nottingham Rock City. Back then, the North London mob impressed so much so that I bought their début album The Art of Saying Nothing. I am truly surprised that it took so long for the group to release a second album and expecting so much, it is fair to say that I am a little disappointed with this effort. The album kicks off with a lot of promise; 'Clowns At a Funeral' builds and builds before er..

Map & Atlases are a Chicago-based quartet that before this review I didn’t have a huge knowledge of. I had heard their name and after a little reading up about them, on paper they seemed like my kind of band. Signed to Fat Cat Records (a personal favourite) and mentions of ‘math rock’ and that there were influences of folk and experimental music, all was looking good. So I thought. Read more..

As a born-again record collector, RSD is always one of my favouritve days of the year. I am really lucky because in Cheltenham (a reasonably small town somewhere near Bristol) we have not one but two independent record stores. Both of them always make RSD a real social event by putting on a whole host of local bands and DJ's and this year, even a bar! So I guess this is a summary of what I did and purchased and experienced on Saturday 21st April, Record Store Day 2012: 6.30 am Woke up - crazy early for..

Another pop-up gallery in the same style as some of London Miles' former installations, Graffik Gallery on Portabello Road has collaborated with 'Somewhere To' to put on a show focusing on the art of under 25s. There are some banners painted directly on the walls, but the primary pieces by Dionne Helene (www.madflavour.co.uk) are formed of layered collages, photos of urban decay placed on marbled backgrounds created with spray. Tags appear in the pieces, nods to ideas of space and territory in areas of..
