Mono / Mista Breakfast monomistabreakfast
Why did you do that ? And what inspired you in the first place ?
Origins lie dormant inside my head , put there by a constant stream of input from my surroundings , so i surround myself with the bizarre ,and constantly seek out stimulation . This has become second nature now , after 18 years of actively and passively absorbing information , collating and reforming often subconsciously , developing tastes and skills to further my art , always learning , my only battle is with myself.
My dwellings consist of shelves and piles of books , magazines, comics and printed paper , and i begin every day reading . The words form pictures after a short while, as with everything i perceive, including audio , i seemingly cerebrally translate , creating a visual equivalent in the minds eye . Bombarded with this inexhaustible flow of images , that i have trained myself to be the recipient of , that must be expelled and dealt with , causing me be productive and be creative
Where to begin, logically, at the origin, where eyes and mind work as one .
My eyes are constantly seeking , my head translating the patterns i conjure so that my hands can be as Xerox machines . I am trying to adjust myself , , reforming and adding bits as i go , creating a machine , so that this process becomes effortless. Part man , part robot . . . a thinking creative side, the brain , encased in a self made exoskeleton capable of carrying out the whims of the brain unit . Updating and improving , upgrading for the future. Subjecting myself to various conditions , never wanting to narrow my horizons , i travel far outside the box. Inspirations from science , nature, philosophy and the surreal , Authors like Philip K.Dick , J G Ballard , Brian Aldiss , Isaac Asimov , Ray Bradbury and Robbert Heinlein to name but a few , adorn the shelves of my house and mind but contrast with my love of history . From past to future and everything in between , hindsight and unforeseeable possiblitities rolled into one . Juxtaposed but balanced , wide and variable , fighting off the narrow mindedness that affects so many, like a disease that is consuming the box dwellers with the ir flat screen dulling down devices and intellect consuming drugs like Eastenders. Waste of time and causes blank spots and lack of clarity
This theme of non narrow mindedness and growth is partly what drives me and is present in other aspects of my art , and so we move on to the physical . As with what i choose to let in my head* , i vary the mediums i work with and in . Illustration using anything from pencil to computer , graphic design , screen printing , graffiti, street art , painting canvas` , etcetera . . . for all sorts of different clients . I design album covers , logos , tattoos, murals for private and public spaces , corporate and civil, and make/ design clothing too, plus whatever else as long as its creative and keeps me developing actively.
Entering in to the world , the beginnings of what we called Mono, unaided and un restricted by anothers will , was started in the form of a clothing company . There was more of me then , in fact 2 of us , who began designing under the collective term Mono, this eventually multiplied to 4 and at this stage i stopped spraying , i designed and illustrated , created a brand with a look and a style , this was to be the image which i now maintain individually, We are Mono , we are one ,yet we are many, . . .after years of limited success , limited because we had it that way , we underwent a form of mitosis multiplying but in the end there was a divide and we split . Three quarters departed leaving the one to defend the fort. This marked the return to the aerosol paint cans and after 7 years of non pressurised art , i returned , back to the wall. Thats was 3 years ago and i have no idea what the future holds for me , i will take it in my stride and enjoy the process, wherever it may lead.
*This can be dangerous for your well being , we become what we think and sometimes it can be necessary to guard against unwanted input to avoid becoming warped and mislead, or in the very least protect yourself and question what you are absorbing, everything created by the hands of man has bias and motive , thus it was created in the first place, else there would be no point for the person doing it. Be open but not naive, question everything and form opinions of your own which are as biased as any others, I accept my imperfections .
The street is a gallery, instead of plain white walls, pictures hanging stranded in a sterile environment. Let the signs, bridges, buildings and anything with a surface bear the marks of a visually aware being. The decay and grime of the urban sprawl can add to the art, contrasting or complementing it, causing the work to be more relevant giving it context and perspective - on display for free to a large audience. Mono challenges the monotony of advertising campaigns that bombard us with more Starbucks, and blurs the lines between product and advertising, concentrating on craftsmanship over mass appeal.
