Raegan Oates raeganoates

Music Editor FD2D

I'm Raegan. I'm part of the FD2D team. I annoy the boys and inject some much need estrogen into the equation at the magazine. I'm usually found trapped within the written pages, although occassionally you'll find me on here.

I have a bad habit of being In Love With Print. The boys would kill me to say this but there it is. Something else about me I.Write. Alot.

I should update this more often and as an editors page it's pretty dire really ... but who reads these things anyway. Peace x

raeganoates added an article An Interview with Todd Jerm

Todd Jerm is a freelance illustrator and artist who is best known for his striking and surreal images. Highly imaginative with an eccentric manner, the artist tells us that Todd Jerm is actually two men who are quite different from each other. Todd 1 we are told deals with the interesting jobs that crop up (He likes beer and doesn’t always like what Todd 2 makes him do and he makes Todd 2 late all the time) and it’s his artwork that we see on the cover of this issue of FD2D. Then there’s Todd 2 who deals with trying to make a living and paying the bills and the more commercial stuff. Both artists’ work is well worth looking at though, with each viewing of their pieces presenting a plethora of new things unnoticed before. The two combined play bass and exhibites work with Alright The Captain, a local Derby band, worked at live drawing events for Subism, Best Joined Up and the Contemporary Gallery in Nottingham and have done mural work for the Anthony Walker Foundation, Diesel and the Hampton Court Flower Show. Catching up with both Todds we found out more of what makes these artists tick and what originally brought them through the FD2D doors.

raeganoates added an article An Interview with Erica Burns

Erica Burns is a freelance illustrator, artist, and pattern designer who has a love of vibrant colour and detail. Her work is bold and beautiful and she brings every image that she designs skillfully to life. With a proven track record of illustrations for use in editorial and advertising campaigns for companies such as Virgin Holidays and Dieline her ideas are honest, viable and eye-catching. That’s why for this edition of FD2D we asked Erica to design our cover celebrating the eagerly awaited 2012 Olympics. With her concept looking at the unity of The Games she told us that she hoped to “Inject some life and energy into the cover. The Olympics don’t happen very often and it really is a hopeful and positive time for all the countries involved.” It only takes one look at the front of our magazine to see that she has achieved this with ultimate panache. Catching up with Erica we found out more of what makes this artist tick.

The Twilight Sad have announced details of their new long-player ‘No One Can Ever Know’, the follow-up to their 2009 acclaimed breakthrough ‘Forget The Night Ahead’. Freshly inspired, it sees a synth-heavy sound made with vintage analogue synthesizers. Lycrically singer James Graham is on typically ominous form, delivering lightning bolts of malevolent threat. Forthcoming new single, ‘Another Bed’ is also the most radical yet anthemic song on the album with its driving disco-motorik and glacial keys pushing toward a dizzy emotional swell. With the band returning from a month-long tour in the U.S, we caught up with singer James to talk about their upcoming visit to Leicester for the Summer Sundae Weekender.

‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ (A Trip To The Moon) is a classic black & white silent film by revered French director Georges Méliès. Released in 1902, this legendary 14-minute film is widely considered one of the most important works in film history, and the very first to use science fiction as its theme, incorporating special effects that were very state-of-the-art at the turn of the 19th century. It was loosely based on two popular novels of the time: Jules Verne's ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ and H. G. Wells ‘The First Men In The Moon’.

raeganoates added an article Interview with Blood Red Shoes

Blood Red Shoes are Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell, a rock band that know there’s power and intensity in simplicity and this year they’ve released new album ‘Fire Like This’ alongside an intensive tour of the U.K. Be warned this is not your typical rock fare, Blood Red Shoes know you don’t need a whole string section to denote “emotional”, or a whole horn section to do “rousing”. They know rock music doesn’t need to be smothered in effects or laced with devious studio tricks to make an impact. There is another way and it involves boiling songs down to their essence– just raw guitar riffs and drum hits presented crisp and unadorned. At this year’s Summer Sundae FD2D caught up with Blood Red Shoes to talk about the events of 2011 so far and the last date of their UK tour.

'Crisis Works' is loosely concerned with the idea that crisis can kind of be engineered around us to make us more pliable. As Gordon explains; 'We're living with a siege mentality about recession and spending cuts that's becoming the narrative for our times. But it's that siege mentality that makes it easier to confer 'difficult' decisions on us from above. It's an excuse, but also an opportunity.' The record, he says, is about 'Global economics - but it's probably more about the crisis principle on a personal level; how it affects your own decisions and thoughts'.
