Thomas Phillips thomasphillips

Freelance illustrator

I'm a freelance illustrator from Shropshire, United Kingdom. My job consists of taking real life stories and using simplified imagery to interpret them into a visual format. The flat colours and metaphoric devices present in my work are the result of a refinement process that aims to include only relevant visual aides to communicate the message to the viewer as quickly as possible, an approach developed whilst studying illustration at the University of Derby, from which I graduated in January 2011. Although I'm happy to apply this way of working to any project I find it is particularly well suited to the editorial market where I've had the privilege of working for clients such as The Independent and The Financial Times.

The current economic situation facing our coalition and governments across the globe means that the future is being viewed with much uncertainty. No one in employment is taking their job for granted, while it is hard to predict what inflation levels will be or how much the price of fuel will be twelve, or even six months down the line. Yet despite the gloom hanging over many sectors the conditions for those looking at going into business are better than one might presume.

Had a pleasant surprise this morning when the postman dropped off a copy of the Scottish edition of the TES from the beginning of April containing a piece of my work. This was for the Comment & Analysis section in regards to putting students at the heart of further education.

thomasphillips added an article Derby arts cuts & Innovation

There’s no doubting that Derby, with the likes of Joseph Pickford, John Lombe and Charles Rolls in its ranks, has played a major role over the last few centuries in helping Britain become a world leader in fields such as architecture, manufacturing and engineering. In modern times computer gamers may have pointed out it is also the birthplace of the Playstation sensation Tomb Raider. However, with the nation currently in the middle of its worst financial crisis since the 1940’s, the class of 2012 will have to think on its feet in order to survive this difficult period.

thomasphillips added an article Change of tune at Derby's Silk Mill

The former industrial museum is at the centre of a dynamic transformation of Derby’s museums, arts and cultural offer. It has always been a key figure in the city and we want this globally significant site (the world’s First Factory and the southern gateway to the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site) to be the modern hub for the renewal of a world class, world changing, living tradition of creativity and the making of real things.

Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces when returning to the University of Derby for the private view of the Images 35 exhibition on Monday. The exhibition, which consists of work from the Images 35 annual, is currently on tour around the UK and will be at the Markeaton Street Campus until 4th February 2012. I was one of six UoD graduates selected including Rachel Slack, whose illustration is featured above.

thomasphillips added an article Arts in Derby: Moving with the times

The council’s decision in October to temporarily close the Silk Mill Museum for two years (although the ground floor is predicted to be reopened much sooner) allowing it to be moth balled was initially met with a hostile reaction amongst locals angry at the prospect of losing one of its main cultural assets. However, the £200,000 saved as a result of moth balling the Silk Mill will benefit the city by allowing more of the Derby Museum and Art Galleries collection to be displayed for public viewing.

There’s no doubt the arts and culture organisations in Derby are putting on some great shows and exhibitions. Combined with the high standard of work produced in creative spaces such as Banks’ Mill they have helped Derby with its status as a city of culture. However, without a keen level of interest shown by the general public these institutions would find it difficult to survive.
